We spent this issue awake at hours most of our readers aren't. A bakery at three, a subway tunnel at two, a diner that never locks its door. The people in these pages keep a version of the city running that the rest of us only pass through on the way to somewhere else. We came away thinking the night shift is not a lesser version of the day, just a different one, with its own rules.
